In Islam, after the birth of a baby, the baby must be named on the 7th day and it is highly demanded to perform Aqiqah on it and shave the baby's hair until it is bald.
Why do we need to shave the baby's hair when the newly born baby's hair is very beautiful and thick, the main purpose of shaving the baby's hair is to ensure that the cute one is free from all diseases, this is because the baby's hair has been covered in blood while in the womb.
This is also because of a Hadith from the Prophet
It means: "Each child is redeemed with his aqiqah, a sacrifice is made in his name on the seventh day, his head is shaved and he is given a name."
(Hadith Narrated by Abu Dawud 2838)
Shaving a baby's hair is one of the circumcision things encouraged by Syarak. This is based on a hadith from Saidina Ali RA, he said:
It means: "The Messenger of God SAW gave a goat for al-Hasan and then said: "O Fatimah, shave his hair and give charity the weight of the hair after weighing it with (scales of) silver." Ali said: "The weight is equal to one dirham or half a dirham."
(Hadith Narrated by Al-Tirmizi 1519)
The Maliki and Syafie schools of thought believe that it is sunnah to donate the weight of the shaved hair with its value gold or silver. While according to the Hanbali sect, the value of the weight given in charity is based on the value of silver. If the hair is not shaved, then the weight should be estimated and donated according to the value based on what one can afford. (Refer to al-Mausu'ah al-Fiqhiyyah al-Kuwaitiyyah, 26:107)
Imam Nawawi Rhm. in this case mention the error of Syafieyyah scholars in this matter
It means: "Regarding the issue, does shaving come first over slaughtering (aqiqah)? (The answer) There are two views. [The most correct view] is as held by the writers, al-Baghawi, al-Jurjani, and other than them that it is sunnah to shave the hair after performing aqiqah (because there is a hadith that indicates such a gesture (order). [The second view mentions] it is circumcised to shave one's hair before performing aqiqah. This view is held by al-Mahamili in his book al-Muqni' and is supported by al-Ruyani as quoted from the example of Imam al-Syafie. Wallahua'lam.”
(Refer to: al-Majmu' Sharh Muhazzab, 8/433)
The hadith referred to by imam Nawawi above refers to the hadith narrated by Samurah bin Jundub RA that the Prophet Muhammad SAW said,
It means: "The baby was redeemed by his aqiqah. Slaughtered (aqiqah) for him on the seventh day, his hair was shaved, and he was given a name.”
(Hadith Narrated by Abu Daud 1522)
According to the order of the hadith above, the recommendation for slaughtering the aqeeqah is mentioned first before the mention of shaving the hair and giving a name. This matter is reinforced by the view narrated by 'Abd al-Razzaq in his mushannaf, from Ibn Juraij, he said:
It means: "Beginning with slaughter (aqiqah), then shaving."
(Refer to: Mushannaf 'Abd al-Razzaq, 4/332)
Therefore, the best implementation sequence is as shown in the hadith above, which is to put Aqiqah first before shaving the hair and the rest on the 7th day of birth.
If you don't have time or have certain constraints, then you can postpone Aqiqah on the 14th or 21st day. If you still don't have time, you can do it at any time you have time before the child reaches puberty.
Jumhur ulama' Maliki, Syafie and Hanbali are of the opinion that the act of shaving one's hair and giving alms with its weight is a practice that circumcision
If the hair is not shaved, then it should be estimated weight and donated according to the value based on what one can afford. (Ref al-Mausu'ah al-Fiqhiyyah al-Kuwaitiyyah, 26:107)
The law of this act is circumcision only with according to ability and not up to mandatory law. Therefore, this is highly encouraged to be done by those who are able to express joy and as a sign of gratitude to Allah SWT.
