Azan For Babies and Tahnik for Little Ones

Azan and iqamah are symbols and syyar in Islam. In the context of celebrating a birth, it is recited and recited immediately after the birth of the baby, that is, with the azan in the right ear and the iqamah in the left ear. The law is not obligatory, but it is symbolic of the beginning of the words that the baby hears, and it is included in the good things to do and not in the specific worship category.

It was once done by Umar bin Abdul Aziz and most scholars. There is a hadith from Imam Baihaqi that the Prophet sallallahu 'alaihi wasallam prayed to the right ear and iqamah to the left ear of Hasan Bin Ali, the grandson of His Majesty sallallahu 'alaihi wasallam.

Why is it not obligatory, while Rasulullah sallallahu 'alaihi wasallam did it? This is because there is a discussion in the status of the above hadith in which the hadith scholars assess the status of the above hadith as a weak hadith. There are many factors in evaluating and determining the weakness of a hadith, and the discussion about it is long. In addition, there are other hadiths that show the Prophet sallallahu 'alaihi wasallam continued to name, name and pray for a new baby without praying for it at the beginning of the birth.

Among the wisdom of azan and iqamah mentioned by Imam Ibnul Qayyim is to make the word Tawhid (Shahadah) as the first and earliest word heard by the baby after coming out on earth. Make sure the baby hears the word tawhid first after coming out of his mother's womb. Kalimah tauhid is a word full of majesty and praise to God Almighty. In addition, it is also recited so that the devil does not approach him because the devil will run away from the call to prayer. It is hoped that, with these practices and steps, it will have a lasting and profound effect on the baby's soul and remain firm in his heart until the end of his life.

The initial practice apart from the call to prayer that should be done after the call to prayer is the baby shower. Tahnik in Malay tradition translates to 'split mouth'. Tahnik is chewing dates or something else (something sweet), then applying it to the baby's palate. The best time to do tahnik is on the day of the baby's birth. It can be done by the baby's father, but it should be done by a pious person so that the baby can take some blessings from the prayers and praise of the pious person. If you want to skip the tahnik practice, it can be done within seven days after the birth of the baby.

The tahnik law is a sunnah, and does not reach the obligatory law. From Abu Musa radiallahu 'anhu:

"I was blessed with a son, so I brought him to Rasulullah sallallahu 'alaihi wasallam, and he named the baby 'Ibrahim', then wrapped him with a date, prayed for the baby with blessings, and gave him back to me".

- Hadith Narrated by Bukhari & Muslim.

According to some scholars, among the purposes and wisdom mentioned in this practice is to strengthen the baby's mouth muscles. It is in preparation for sucking the mother's milk, in addition to the space for the celebrant to pray for the baby's well-being. Hopefully by practicing this tahnik, it will have a better effect on the health and strength of the baby's soul until adulthood later, Ameen.
